“Bridging Borders: A Three-Part Journey Between IMC and CSPC”
{Three Sessions, Two Cultures, One Connection}
IMC continues its commitment to global citizenship through its annual Cultural-Exchange Project. Now in its third year, our partnership with CSPC, a state university from the Philippines, featured a three-part series designed to deepen cross-cultural understanding:
- Jan. 30: Part I – Japanese Calligraphy
- Feb. 6: Part II – Philippine Folk Dance
- Feb. 13: Part III – Open Discussion (Festivals and Tourism)
These sessions which are conducted via ZOOM go beyond simple interaction, fostering a meaningful connection between students and the diverse traditions that define our global community.
Part I – The Ink (Japanese Calligraphy)
Cultural Exchange is about finding common ground in the most unexpected places. While Japan and the Philippines may speak different languages, the first installment of our three-part series, provided IMC and CSPC a universal canvas to dive deeper in into the art of Japanese Calligraphy.
The session was led by the three IMC representatives from the Medical Technology Department (1年生). They guided our friends from CSPC by teaching them the proper way of writing the two chosen characters namely “平和“ and “友人”.
Through this activity, we have imparted the real essence of the ancient Japanese tradition through 書道. Everyone had realized that “Shodo is not just merely about the pretty writing, but it is an expression of the artist’s inner spirit.” The session ended having both the Japanese and foreign participants exploring and appreciating the discipline and beauty of traditional Japanese scripture.

IMCでは、「文化交流プロジェクト」を通じて、学生たちが世界とつながり、国際的な視野を広げるための環境づくりに真摯に取り組んでいます。
今年で3年目を迎えたフィリピンの州立大学「CSPC」とのパートナーシップ。その集大成として、相互理解を深めるための3回にわたるオンライン交流会を開催しました。
- 1月30日： 第1回「日本の書道」
- 2月6日： 第2回「フィリピンのフォークダンス」
- 2月13日： 第3回「オープンディスカッション（祭り・観光地）」
ZOOMを通じて行われたこれらのセッションは、単なる交流の枠を超え、世界を形作る多様な伝統や文化を通じて、学生たちの間に深い絆を育む貴重な機会となりました。
第1回：墨の響き（日本の書道）
「文化交流とは、思いがけない場所に共通の基盤を見つけ出すことである」
日本とフィリピン、言葉は違えど、この3部作の第1回目は両校にとって「書道」という共通のキャンバス (半紙)に向き合う時間となりました。
このセッションでは、IMCの臨床検査学科（1年生）の代表3名が講師を務めました。彼らはCSPCの学生たちに、心を込めて文字を書く作法を伝え、今回選んだ2つの言葉 「平和」 と 「友人」 の書き方をレクチャーしました。
この活動を通じて、私たちは「書道（Shodo）」という日本の古き良き伝統の真髄を分かち合うことができました。参加者全員が、「書道とは単に文字を美しく書くことではなく、書き手の精神を表現するもの」 であるということを実感したはずです。
最後には、日本人学生も海外の学生も、日本の伝統的な書の規律と美しさを共に探求し、深く味わいながらセッションを締めくくりました。
